First Cerner Millennium Implementation in Spain
Automates Clinician Documentation and Processes
Throughout the Hospital
There is something notably absent at the new Hospital de Denia
- Marina Salud that makes it unlike any other hospital in Spain.
Instead of seeing stacks of paper medical records line the hallways,
you'll see doctors and nurses move from room to room with laptops
and handheld devices. These devices give clinicians access to a
patient's medical history, lab results, current medications, and
other critical medical data. The new hospital is using a fully
automated system from Cerner Iberia, S.L. to help doctors and
nurses provide better care to their patients.
The newly constructed, 280-bed hospital is the first hospital in
Spain to have an integrated electronic medical record system
(EMR) provided by a single healthcare information technology
(HIT) supplier.
'Marina Salud chose the Cerner Millennium(R) solutions because
of their ability to provide clinicians with the information needed
to improve patient care on all services points in the healthcare
network: hospital, health centers and home care,' said Marina
Salud CEO Dr. Luis Fidel Campoy Domene. 'This innovative
approach to healthcare delivery overcomes traditional limitations
such as data duplicity and information inconsistencies; as well as to
serve as a healthcare model to all of Spain.'
Cerner Millennium solutions automate hospital clinical, financial and management processes. The Cerner
Millennium healthcare computing platform provides secure access to an individual's EMR at the point of care
and organizes information to meet the specific needs of care providers, front-and back-office professionals and
consumers.
Hospital de Denia uses Cerner Millennium solutions to automate clinical processes throughout the hospital.
Clinicians also use the Cerner Millennium system to document in the EMR, instead of writing their notes and
submitting the orders on paper. The hospital is connecting various bedside medical devices, such as monitors,
ventilators, electrocardiograms and anesthesia towers, directly to the EMR.
The Cerner Millennium solutions benefit Hospital de Denia patients by allowing doctors and nurses to improve
communication between caregivers through real-time electronic documentation, which allows doctors and nurses
to view updated information about a patient's status from any point in the hospital firstly to significantly reduce
the potential for medication error through the use of a fully automated, closed-loop medication process that
includes physician prescribing, pharmacy validation and dispensing, and nursing administration; and secondly
ensure that patients receive medical care in line with the latest medical guidelines and research by providing all
clinicians with access to relevant clinical data at the point of care through industry-leading decision-support tools.
'This relationship reflects Marina Salud and Cerner's shared vision to improve the healthcare delivery process and
create a safer environment for patients,' said Marcos Garcia Navarrete, Cerner Iberia general manager. 'With this
first-of-its-kind project in Spain, the inhabitants of this region are receiving a level of integrated care which
extends beyond the walls of the hospital and was not previously available.' This is the first implementation of
Cerner Millennium in Spanish.
